On June 1, 1948, 21-year-old Mary Virginia "Jimmie" Carpenter, a resident of Texarkana, Texas, arrived in Denton to attend summer classes at Texas State College for Women (now Texas Woman's University). After disembarking from a train, she took a taxi to Brackenridge Hall, her designated dormitory.
