What happened to Mary Virginia \Jimmie\ Carpenter in 1948?
On June 1, 1948, 21-year-old Mary Virginia "Jimmie" Carpenter, a resident of Texarkana, Texas, arrived in Denton to attend summer classes at Texas State College for Women (now Texas Woman's University). After disembarking from a train, she took a taxi to Brackenridge Hall, her designated dormitory. The taxi driver, Edgar Ray "Jack" Zachary, reported that upon arrival around 9:30 p.m., Carpenter approached two men in a cream-colored convertible parked near the dormitory. She appeared to recognize them and engaged in conversation. This was the last confirmed sighting of Carpenter; she never checked into her dormitory and has not been heard from since.
The subsequent investigation faced numerous challenges. Carpenter's boyfriend, Kenny Branham, and the taxi driver were both questioned. Branham passed polygraph tests and had no apparent motive. Zachary also passed multiple polygraph tests, though his ex-wife later contradicted his initial alibi, stating he returned home much later than he had claimed. Despite these inconsistencies, no charges were filed against him. Over the years, various leads emerged, including reported sightings and tips, but none led to a resolution. In 1998, a tip suggested Carpenter's remains were buried on the college campus, but searches yielded no evidence. The case remains unsolved, with Carpenter's fate still unknown.
