On April 24, 2009, Domitila Alvarez, a 38-year-old mother of five, was brutally murdered in Houston, Texas. Alvarez was visiting her family's auto repair shop in the Alief area when the tragic events unfolded. She had gone there to handle some business matters, but hours later, family members found her lifeless body inside the shop's office. She had been fatally stabbed multiple times during an altercation. There was no apparent motive, and the crime scene was grim, with blood found on her clothing, the door leading out of the office, security bars, and even on a parked truck outside.
The investigation into Alvarez's death initially went cold, as detectives were unable to identify a suspect despite chasing down multiple leads. In 2021, the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division Cold Case Squad reopened the investigation as part of a case-review project. This time, they leveraged advanced forensic technology to re-examine DNA evidence from the crime scene. The new analysis linked Jorge Trevino Cardenas, who was already serving time for an unrelated crime of sexual assault of a child, to the scene. Cardenas's DNA was found on Alvarez's clothes, the door, the security bars, and the truck outside, suggesting he had injured himself during the attack.
Cardenas, who lived near the auto shop and was known to carry a long knife with a serrated edge, was formally charged with Alvarez's murder in January 2023. During the trial, prosecutors used the DNA evidence and the testimony of a witness who confirmed Cardenas's proximity to the crime scene and his possession of a weapon matching the one used in the attack. After a four-day trial, Cardenas was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison, although under Texas law, he will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.
