Douglas Sanford, age 27, was killed in a shooting in San Antonio, Texas, on October 10, 2010. The tragic incident unfolded along Old Seguin Road, just east of I-410, in the early hours of the morning. A San Antonio Police Department officer, who was leaving Brooke Army Medical Center at the time, heard gunshots and followed the sounds to the location where he found Sanford's abandoned car with the left blinker still on.
Nearby, the officer discovered a gasoline can, shell casings, and a trail of blood that led him to Sanford's body, which was lying in a ditch. Sanford had been shot multiple times in the back and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sanford had spent the evening with friends and was returning to the home he shared with his mother, his wife, and their three young children. It is suspected that he ran out of gas and went to a nearby gas station when he was ambushed and shot. His mother, Vera Frierson, described her anguish, stating that Sanford had been chased down and shot "like an animal." She emphasized the pain the family has experienced, especially as Sanford was her only son and the youngest of six children. His sisters recalled how he enjoyed being the only boy among the siblings and often helped with tasks like fixing their cars.
Sanford was a father of three young children, and his death left his wife, Lakesha Sanford, to care for their two boys, aged 7 and 8, and a daughter, aged 3. The family is still reeling from the impact of the murder, and they continue to seek justice for his death. The police have not publicly disclosed a motive for the shooting, and no suspects have been officially identified at this time.
