On December 31, 2014, Thanh Nguyen, aged 21, was found dead in Houston, Texas. The incident was initially reported as a missing person's case when family members realized they had not seen or heard from Nguyen since December 30. During the investigation, authorities received information that led them to Barbara Jean Stanford, who was alleged to be Nguyen's girlfriend.

According to the investigation, Nguyen was fatally shot by Stanford during an argument at her home in Montgomery County. Stanford claimed that the confrontation began when Nguyen tried to take one of her children, at which point she shot him in what she described as self-defense. Following the shooting, Stanford reportedly attempted to conceal the crime by burning Nguyen's body and burying the remains in her backyard. Several traces of evidence, including blood, bone fragments, and a man's ring, were discovered on her property during a police search.

Further suspicious activities involved the unauthorized use of Nguyen's credit cards by Stanford following his death, including ATM withdrawals and purchases at local stores. This evidence, along with her eventual confession, led to Stanford being charged with Nguyen's murder. Despite her claim of self-defense, authorities remain skeptical, as multiple items stolen from Nguyen's home were also recovered from Stanford’s house and her neighbors' homes. The case is marked by complexities surrounding the motives and the series of events that led to Nguyen's death, with ongoing legal proceedings aimed at bringing justice to the victim's family.
