On November 12, 2015, Patrick Petitt, a 35-year-old resident of Houston, was fatally shot inside his apartment located at 1001 Pinemont. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 1:30 a.m., when an unknown man was let into the apartment that Petitt shared with his uncle, Craig Miller. Shortly after the man entered, Miller overheard an argument between Petitt and the suspect. This escalated when the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot Petitt, killing him on the scene. Miller tried to intervene and was also shot, but he survived and was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
The suspect fled the scene before police arrived, and no arrests were made immediately after the incident. The investigation was taken on by the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division, which urged anyone with information to come forward and assist in solving the case. Petitt’s death was one of the many homicides that contributed to a sharp rise in murders in Houston that year. In fact, Houston experienced a significant increase in homicides during the early months of 2015, with reports indicating a 46% increase compared to previous years.
