On November 16, 2014, 19-year-old Rikko Armando Valencia was fatally shot in northwest Houston, Texas. After finishing his shift at a local Whataburger around 4:20 a.m., Valencia was walking home when he was approached by three individuals in a vehicle. Two suspects exited the car and demanded his belongings. When Valencia did not comply quickly, one of the assailants shot him in the face at point-blank range. His body was discovered later that morning in a church parking lot at 10131 Emnora.

The Houston Police Department's Homicide Division investigated the case and, by January 2015, arrested three suspects: Andres Rojo, 19; Jorge Castro, 17; and Edgardo Ligas, 19. Each was charged with capital murder in the 337th State District Court. The suspects admitted their involvement, stating that robbery was the motive behind the attack.
