On April 11, 2016, James Weldon Ecford, aged 25, was tragically killed while defending his mother during an attempted armed robbery in Houston, Texas. The incident occurred late at night at the Sands Point Condominiums, where James and his mother were returning home. As they arrived, a suspect approached from behind and grabbed his mother's purse. Hearing her screams, James rushed to confront the suspect, and a struggle ensued.
During the confrontation, the suspect drew a firearm and shot James. The suspect fired another shot at James's mother, but fortunately, she was not hit. The suspect then escaped in a waiting vehicle with three other individuals inside.
James was transported to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead from his injuries. The Houston Police Department has continued its investigation, urging anyone with information to come forward. James's family and community have worked to keep his memory alive, describing him as a hero who lost his life while protecting his loved ones.
