On February 10, 2016, 37-year-old African American male Winfrey Eugene Brown was discovered deceased in his residence at 548 Delmar Street on San Antonio's East Side. A friend found him inside the home, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Neighbors reported hearing an argument followed by gunshots during the night, but authorities were not alerted until Brown's friend arrived the following afternoon.
The San Antonio Police Department had been called to this address 84 times since August of the previous year, with 25 of those incidents involving disturbances, including five with firearms and one with a knife. Brown was scheduled to meet a friend but failed to appear, prompting concern. His mother, Gennie Brown, mentioned that he had lost his phone, and she was worried he might miss a meeting with his probation officer. She believed that whoever committed the crime was known to her son, as the door to his home was found open. As of February 19, 2016, no arrests had been made in connection with the murder. San Antonio Crime Stoppers offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible. The case remains unsolved, with no further updates on arrests or suspects.
