On the evening of February 25, 2016, Rayland Dunta Maryland, a 22-year-old resident of Houston, was fatally shot in the 11000 block of Segrest around 10:30 p.m. The incident occurred after Maryland and an unidentified suspect became involved in an argument that escalated into an exchange of gunfire. Tragically, Maryland was struck during the confrontation and died at the scene. The suspect, described only as a Black male in his 20s, fled immediately after the shooting, and the Houston Police Department launched an investigation into the incident to determine the exact motive and bring the perpetrator to justice.
Maryland's death left a profound impact on his family and friends. He is remembered by his long-time companion, Hazel Hicks, and their two-year-old daughter, A'Nyiah Maryland. In the wake of his passing, his family, including his parents and siblings, organized a fundraiser to help cover burial expenses, expressing their deep grief and appreciation for any support they received from the community.
The investigation eventually led to the identification of Tavish McKinley, who was arrested and charged with murder over a year later. Police discovered that the argument between McKinley and Maryland led to the shooting, after which McKinley fled on foot. He was subsequently arrested and charged in the 208th State District Court, with bail set at $100,000. This arrest brought some closure to Maryland's grieving family and friends, although the sense of loss remained palpable among those who knew him well. The tragedy highlighted ongoing challenges related to violent crime in Houston, where arguments too often end in deadly confrontations.
