On July 4, 2016, Daquarius Tucker, aged 19, was tragically shot and killed at a block party in Houston's Fourth Ward. The gathering, which took place on Robin Street, was part of the community's Independence Day celebrations, featuring a neighborhood fireworks display. During the festivities, shots were fired, and Tucker, along with two other men—Charles Jackson, aged 29, and Jamal Dixon-Lackey, aged 26—was killed. Two additional victims, a 37-year-old man and a 10-year-old boy, were also wounded but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation later identified Jerome Moore as the suspect. He was charged with capital murder in April 2019, almost three years after the incident. Moore was believed to have specifically targeted Tucker as part of a gang-related dispute, with Jackson and Dixon-Lackey being unintended victims who were simply near Tucker at the time of the attack. The violent event brought grief to the community, with friends and family mourning Tucker, who was remembered as a promising young man with a love for basketball.
The shooting happened just blocks away from Houston's larger Freedom Over Texas celebration. Community members later gathered to honor the victims of this senseless tragedy, highlighting the impact of violence during what was supposed to be a joyful holiday. Jerome Moore was arrested without incident and subsequently charged, providing some closure to the families affected by the incident.
