Jamal Dixon-Lackey, aged 26, was one of three men fatally shot during a block party on July 4, 2016, in Houston, Texas. The incident took place in the Fourth Ward, in the 1300 block of Robin Street, during a neighborhood fireworks display as part of the Independence Day celebrations. A gathering of around 100 people had convened in Freedmen's Town to enjoy the festivities when an altercation broke out and gunfire erupted, resulting in the deaths of three men and injuries to two others, including a 10-year-old boy. Dixon-Lackey, along with Charles Jackson, aged 29, and Daquarius Tucker, aged 19, succumbed to gunshot wounds at the scene. Two additional victims, a 37-year-old man and a young boy, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities reported that Daquarius Tucker was the primary target of the shooting, which appears to have been connected to gang activity. Both Dixon-Lackey and Jackson were in close proximity to Tucker when the shots were fired, making them unintended victims of the incident. The chaotic scene saw people running for cover amid the noise of both fireworks and gunshots, which made it difficult initially to distinguish between celebratory sounds and the fatal violence that ensued.
Three years after the incident, in April 2019, Houston Police arrested Jerome Moore, a 20-year-old suspect, and charged him with capital murder in connection to the killings. According to investigators, Moore's involvement was established through subsequent investigation efforts, and he was taken into custody without incident. The community responded to the tragedy with grief and solidarity, holding vigils to honor the memory of the victims. Residents gathered to express their sorrow and to emphasize the need for unity against violence, particularly in such historically significant areas as the Fourth Ward. The incident has been a painful reminder of the risks posed by gatherings being disrupted by violence, especially on a day meant to celebrate freedom and unity.
