Michael Yates, age 39, was fatally shot on July 11, 2016, while fishing in Halls Bayou, Houston, along with two family friends. The suspect, Jose A. Rios, approached the group and engaged in casual conversation before suddenly opening fire on Yates without apparent provocation. After the shooting, Yates' companions fled, with one narrowly escaping after Rios' firearm jammed.
