On December 12, 2016, Israel Gonzalez, a 32-year-old from Houston, was shot and killed following a road rage incident on the Southwest Freeway. Gonzalez was returning home with his fiancée, Maribel Cavazos, after celebrating a joint bachelor and bachelorette party at Diablo Loco Sports Bar. The couple was driving on the inbound lanes of the freeway when another vehicle, a Nissan Versa, struck their car in a minor collision. Both drivers pulled over, leading to a confrontation between Gonzalez and the driver of the other vehicle, who has not been publicly identified.
According to the driver's account, Gonzalez approached his car holding a knife and punched him in the face. Fearing for his safety, the driver, who had a concealed handgun license, fired a single shot, hitting Gonzalez in the upper chest. Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that a knife was found near Gonzalez, though his family disputes this detail, asserting that Gonzalez was not armed and had no intention of escalating the situation. Cavazos recalled that the confrontation unfolded so quickly she did not have time to intervene before the gunshot was fired.
The driver involved was questioned by police but was not arrested at the time. The Harris County District Attorney's Office decided to refer the case to a grand jury to determine whether charges should be filed. Gonzalez’s family has expressed disbelief over the driver's claims of self-defense, and they have publicly called for a more thorough investigation, emphasizing that Gonzalez was not seeking conflict and merely wanted to resolve the issue peacefully.
In the wake of the tragedy, Gonzalez's family and friends were left to cancel his upcoming wedding and instead make funeral arrangements. He is survived by his fiancée and his two children—a stepdaughter and an eight-year-old daughter.
