On September 5, 2017, Gary Wilson, a 29-year-old from Houston, Texas, was found dead under suspicious circumstances. The Houston Police Department reported numerous incidents of violent crime in the city during 2017, including the case involving Wilson. That year, Houston saw around 269 homicides, a slight decrease compared to 302 in 2016. The reduction, however, did not diminish the severity of many cases, including Wilson's homicide, which became part of a larger trend of shocking violent incidents in Houston that year.

Investigators described the crime scene as particularly disturbing, with initial findings pointing toward foul play. Authorities worked to piece together the events leading to Wilson's death while facing challenges such as a lack of immediate suspects. Throughout 2017, nearly 50 people were charged with various forms of murder in Houston, highlighting the scale of ongoing investigations. Despite the downward trend in the city's overall homicide rate, Wilson's case stood out, demonstrating the persistent issues of violent crime in the Houston area during that period.

The Houston Police Department emphasized their commitment to solving cases like Wilson's, though a shortage of witness testimony often hampered progress. Throughout the investigation, law enforcement agencies made public pleas for any information that might aid in solving the case. This incident, alongside others, underscored the city's struggle with a growing sense of insecurity, driven by a combination of personal disputes, gang violence, and other contributing factors during that tumultuous year.
