In the winter of 2016, a Memphis family was devastated by the loss of 35-year-old Timothy Simpson. His life was abruptly ended, and the circumstances of his death revealed a grim and violent story. On December 2, 2016, Simpson's body was discovered inside a vacant apartment in the 3800 block of Jackson Avenue. An investigation determined that he had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The ensuing police investigation into the homicide led to a suspect named Jeremy Moten Jr.
of Marion, Arkansas. Evidence suggested that Simpson was not only murdered but also robbed of his cell phone, clothing, and $50. Investigators were able to connect Moten to the crime, leading to his arrest.
In November 2017, a Shelby County grand jury indicted Jeremy Moten Jr., who was 25 years old at the time, on charges of first-degree murder and especially aggravated robbery in connection with Timothy Simpson's death. The indictment was part of a larger case against Moten, who was also charged in a separate shooting that had occurred just weeks before Simpson's murder. In that earlier incident, Moten was accused of shooting and robbing a man during a dice game. For that crime, he faced charges of attempted second-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, and employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. The cases were prosecuted by the Shelby County District Attorney's office.
