In the summer of 2017, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in East Nashville. Anthony Jerrell London, a 23-year-old male, was killed in a shooting that also left another person wounded on the evening of Saturday, July 22, 2017. The incident unfolded around 10:15 p.m. in the James Cayce Homes neighborhood, a community that would be shaken by the night's violent events.
According to police reports from the time, the shooting occurred in the 600 block of South
Seventh Street. When officers arrived at the scene, they found London and another man, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were urgently transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. While the second victim survived his injuries, Anthony London succumbed to his, leaving a family and a community to mourn their loss.
The investigation into the shooting was handled by the Metro Nashville Police Department. In the immediate aftermath, detectives worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter. Their efforts led them to identify a suspect in the case. Less than a week after the shooting, on July 28, 2017, an arrest was made.
The individual taken into custody was 22-year-old Montrez Duncan. He was charged with criminal homicide for the death of Anthony London and aggravated assault for the wounding of the second victim.
