Calvin Smith, a 41-year-old African American man from Memphis, spent his last evening on November 29, 2017, in a modest apartment setting along North Claybrook Street in North Memphis. Shortly before 7 p.m., the quiet of an ordinary midweek night was broken by gunfire near 1084 North Claybrook, just east of the I-40 corridor.
