Maurice Penny, a 24-year-old aspiring musician, was tragically shot and killed on March 6, 2013, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred in the Garfield neighborhood, specifically in the hallway of an apartment building on Stratford Avenue, just before 5 p.m. Authorities reported that the shooting appeared to have been a result of a confrontation between Penny and another individual.
Penny was found with a gunshot wound to the chest, and investigators recovered a firearm from the scene, which may have belonged to him, suggesting that he fired at least one shot during the altercation.
The circumstances of Penny’s death are still under investigation, with police currently seeking more information. A red or burgundy pickup truck with two occupants was reportedly seen leaving the area immediately after the shooting, headed toward East Liberty. Despite efforts, there have not been many leads in identifying the perpetrator(s) of this homicide.
Penny’s death was part of a broader context of violence in Pittsburgh in 2013, which had a significant impact on the Black community. Out of the 91 homicides in Allegheny County that year, 65 involved Black victims, with a significant majority being young Black men, reflecting the ongoing struggle with violence in certain areas of the city. The Garfield neighborhood, like many others, has been affected by such violence, underscoring the critical need for community engagement and proactive measures to address the underlying issues contributing to these tragedies.
