On a warm holiday evening in Philadelphia, just before midnight on Sunday, July 3, 2016, the life of 16-year-old Asir Brown was tragically cut short. The young Black male was attending a backyard barbecue at his aunt's home on the 1800 block of South 31st Street, a gathering meant for celebration and camaraderie over the Fourth of July weekend. Friends and family were present as the night unfolded, unaware of the violence that was about to erupt.
Suddenly, the festive atmosphere was
shattered by a barrage of gunfire. A dark-colored car had pulled into the alley behind the house, and at least one person from the back seat opened fire on the teenagers gathered in the yard. Investigators later determined that 19 shots were fired from two different firearms. As chaos ensued and the young attendees scrambled for safety, Asir was struck by a single bullet to his back. Police were called to the scene at 11:59 p.m. and found the gravely wounded teen. He was rushed to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, but despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead the following morning.
In the wake of the shooting, the community mourned the loss of a young man described by his football coach as a 'good kid' who was not involved in street life. The Philadelphia Police Department launched a homicide investigation, searching for two gunmen they believed were responsible for the attack. Detectives suspected the motive may have been rooted in a dispute between teenagers from different parts of the city, possibly over a girl. A substantial reward was offered for any information that would lead to an arrest and conviction. However, despite these efforts and public pleas for witnesses to come forward, the case remains unsolved. No arrests have been made, and the individuals responsible for the death of Asir Brown have not been brought to justice, leaving his family and community still waiting for answers.
