In the light of a November afternoon in 2016, the life of 22-year-old Niles Young was tragically cut short in a sudden burst of violence in Pittsburgh's East Hills neighborhood. An African-American male, Young was in a parking lot near the Maplewood Apartments, absorbed in the task of working on a car. The ordinary Saturday was shattered when assailants emerged from a nearby wooded area and indiscriminately opened fire, loosing at least 15 rounds in the direction of Young and others present.
The attack, which occurred just after 12:30 p.m., was as senseless as it was brutal.
Struck multiple times in the back, Young was gravely wounded. The chaos of the moment also caught three other individuals in its violent net. A 29-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl, who were sitting in a car nearby, were both injured by the gunfire. The woman sustained a wound to her arm, while the young girl was grazed on her foot. An 8-year-old boy inside one of the residences was also injured by shattered glass. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and Young was transported to a local hospital. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries about an hour after the shooting.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the community was left in shock and fear. The brazen nature of the daylight attack left residents on edge. Law enforcement officials immediately began an investigation into the homicide, but the identities of the shooters remained elusive. Police officials made a public plea for assistance, emphasizing their urgent need for information from the community to help identify those responsible for the death of Niles Young and the injuries to the other victims. At the time, authorities reported that they had no information regarding the number of assailants or any description of the suspects. The motive behind the shooting also remained unclear, and as of the latest available information, the case remains under investigation, with no arrests having been made.
