In the early morning hours of November 25, 2017, the life of a 14-year-old African-American male named Augustus Gray was tragically cut short in Pittsburgh's Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar neighborhood. A student at Woodland Hills Junior High School, Augustus, who was from Braddock, was discovered lying in the middle of Paulson Avenue with a single, devastating gunshot wound to his head. The city's ShotSpotter system had alerted police to the gunfire around 6 a.m., leading them to the grim scene.
He was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition, but succumbed to his injuries approximately eleven hours later.
The initial investigation into the young man's death proved challenging for law enforcement, as there were no immediate witnesses or suspects. The community, particularly the Woodland Hills School District, was left reeling from the senseless violence that had claimed one of its own. The loss was deeply felt, prompting calls from local leaders for an end to the gun violence that had taken another young life. A significant breakthrough in the investigation came in January 2019, nearly two years after the shooting. The Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force arrested 47-year-old Tremayne Wilmer of Verona, charging him with criminal homicide in connection with Augustus Gray's death. Also taken into custody was Wilmer's 33-year-old girlfriend, Nehlah Stubblefield, who faced charges of perjury and false swearing, indicating she had allegedly provided false information during the investigation. Both individuals were subsequently booked into the Allegheny County Jail, bringing a measure of progress to a case that had long been a source of sorrow and unanswered questions.
