Anton Kamaev, a 35-year-old white male, was visiting Pittsburgh from Russia when his life was tragically cut short. On the evening of December 19, 2017, Kamaev was a passenger in a friend's car, traveling along Second Avenue near the Hot Metal Bridge. It was then that a bullet, not intended for him, pierced the vehicle and struck him in the head. The driver, who was uninjured, initially thought a rock had hit the car before realizing the horrifying reality of the situation and immediately
sought help.
Kamaev was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. For nine days, he fought for his life, with his wife, Olga, flying in from Russia to be by his side. Despite the hopes and prayers of his loved ones, Anton Kamaev succumbed to his injuries on December 28, 2017. In the wake of this senseless tragedy, his family made the compassionate decision to donate his organs, a gift that brought new life to four individuals.
The investigation into Kamaev's death has been met with significant challenges. Pittsburgh Police have stated that Kamaev was an innocent victim, a bystander caught in a horrific act of gun violence, and was not the intended target. To date, there have been no arrests made in connection with the shooting, and police have not publicly identified any suspects.
