On June 16, 1975, 58-year-old Wilbur Jones was found dead in his Portland apartment on NE Union Avenue (now Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard). The apartment was in disarray, and Jones, who was physically disabled, had been beaten, suffering a traumatic neck injury. He was known to drink excessively and was in poor health, often using a wheelchair or cane.
