On August 23, 1989, 47-year-old Walter Uria Pirtle was murdered in downtown Eugene, Oregon. Pirtle, who was without housing, was attacked while waiting outside a blood donor bank around 4 a.m. Two suspects approached him and another man, demanding money. Pirtle was brutally assaulted with a club and stabbed with a knife, succumbing to his injuries at the scene. His companion, however, survived with less serious injuries.
