A passerby discovered his body shortly before 7 a.m. on North Williams Avenue, just north of North Failing Street, lying next to a shopping cart. An autopsy later revealed that Mr. Gibb had died from stab wounds. Investigators were able to determine that his death occurred around 1:00 a.m.
that same morning.
Carl Gibb was known in the area as someone who would often be seen with a shopping cart, collecting cans and other items. He was reported to have had a mental disability. At the time of his death, Mr. Gibb was divorced and was the father of two young children. When authorities arrived at the scene where his body was found, they also discovered a puppy and a kitten with him.
The investigation into his death remains an unsolved cold case. A witness reported seeing two African-American men speaking with Mr. Gibb in the vicinity of where his body was later found, shortly before 1 a.m. One of the men was described as being between 25 and 30 years old, approximately 6 feet tall, and weighing around 200 pounds; he was reportedly wearing a black baseball cap, a black jacket, and blue jeans. The second man was also described as being about 6 feet tall and between 25 and 30 years old, wearing dark jeans and a dark-colored jacket. No arrests have been made in connection with the death of Carl Gibb Jr.
