Who murdered Beryl Leroy Haynes in 1991? In the early morning hours of June 6, 1991, a call came in to police about an intoxicated man on the Burnside Bridge in Portland, Oregon. Responding officers found 38-year-old Beryl Leroy Haynes, a Caucasian male, staggering and appearing intoxicated. In an effort to prevent him from injuring himself, they asked him to sit on the sidewalk. It was then that the officers noticed blood on his clothing, prompting an immediate call for paramedics.
While being transported to a local hospital,
Haynes managed to tell the officers that he had been stabbed by five Hispanic males on the bridge. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, Beryl Haynes succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the assault and died at the hospital. His death was ruled a homicide.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing Haynes chasing a Hispanic male in his twenties across the Burnside Bridge. The chase reportedly ended when the man met up with two or three other Hispanic males, also in their twenties. According to these accounts, the group then assaulted Haynes before fleeing in opposite directions. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Beryl Haynes, and the case remains an open cold case investigation. Authorities continue to ask for the public's help with any information that might lead to the identification and arrest of the individuals responsible for his death.
