Do you know who murdered James? In the criminal underworld of the early 1980s, connections and loyalties were often a matter of life and death, a reality James 'John' Callahan would come to understand all too well. His association with the notorious Winter Hill Gang, a powerful Irish-American crime syndicate operating out of Boston, ultimately sealed his fate, though the final act of his life would play out far from the gang's New England turf.
Callahan, a man with ties to the criminal organization, found himself a person of interest to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI's curiosity was piqued by the brazen daylight murder of Tulsa businessman Roger Wheeler in May of 1981, a hit orchestrated by the Winter Hill Gang.
Fearing that Callahan would not withstand the pressure of a federal interrogation and would ultimately implicate them in the Wheeler murder, the gang's ruthless leaders, James 'Whitey' Bulger and Stephen Flemmi, made a deadly decision. Acting on a tip from their corrupt FBI handler, John Connolly, who informed them that Callahan was being sought for questioning, they ordered his murder. The task fell to John Martorano, a feared enforcer for the gang. On July 31, 1982, Martorano carried out the execution. Callahan's body was discovered in the trunk of his own Cadillac, abandoned in a parking lot at Miami International Airport.
The investigation into Callahan's death would eventually unravel a web of corruption and violence that reached the highest levels of law enforcement. John Martorano would later admit to the murder. In a stunning turn of events, former FBI agent John Connolly was convicted of second-degree murder for his role in Callahan's death, a consequence of his illicit relationship with Bulger and Flemmi, to whom he had leaked the critical information that led to the killing. Whitey Bulger, after years on the run, was also eventually brought to justice and held accountable for his role in ordering the murder, among a litany of other crimes.
