Do you know what happened to Kim? On May 23, 1992, the body of 31-year-old Kim Marlene McVey, a white female, was discovered behind a partially constructed building at 9600 N. Memorial Drive in Tulsa, Oklahoma. An investigation determined that she had died from a gunshot wound to the head. The case remained unsolved for decades, becoming a cold case that investigators would periodically revisit.
The circumstances surrounding McVey's death were reportedly rooted in a dispute over a drug deal.
On May 16, 1992, McVey was at a known drug house when a man named Joe Green, who is now deceased, arrived to settle a bad deal. A gun battle erupted, during which Green allegedly took McVey hostage, using her as a human shield in the front yard. Tommy Edward Harris, who was inside the house, is said to have fired a gun through a window, striking McVey in the head.
After the shooting, Harris, who was 34 at the time, allegedly dragged McVey's body back into the house and later concealed her remains behind the nearby shed where she would eventually be found. For 28 years, the case saw little movement. However, witnesses who claimed Harris had confessed to the crime to them over the years eventually came forward to law enforcement.
In May 2020, a significant breakthrough occurred in the long-dormant case. Tommy Edward Harris, then 62, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and unlawful removal of a dead body in connection with Kim McVey's death. He was taken into custody at his workplace in Osage County and held without bail. The arrest brought a sense of closure to McVey's family, who had been notified of the development.
