In the late summer of 2001, a young Japanese woman named Mayuko Kawase, a 21-year-old Asian female, vanished from her life in Oklahoma City. She was a foreign exchange student enrolled at Oklahoma City Community College, having previously graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma's English Institute. Described as shy and gullible by her host mother, Mayuko was also known for her desire to make friends.
She was last seen by a classmate on August 20, 2001, when they drove to class together. After that day, she never attended her classes again and all communication with her family and fiancé in Japan ceased. Her last known financial transaction was a purchase at an Albertson's grocery store on August 23, 2001. After not hearing from her, she was reported missing on August 27th. Police found several days' worth of faxes piled up in her home, indicating she had been gone for some time.
For nearly six years, Mayuko's disappearance remained a cold case, a mystery that left her family in Japan waiting for answers. Their concern was so great that in 2006, they traveled to Oklahoma with a Japanese film crew to search for her near Lake Overholser, a location suggested by a psychic. That search, however, yielded no clues as to her whereabouts. The break in the case finally came on April 14, 2007, when a group of boys hiking in a wooded area near the Boy Scout Camp Kickapoo in southeast Oklahoma City discovered a human skull. A subsequent search of the area by police uncovered more remains.
A forensic anthropologist determined the remains belonged to an Asian or Hispanic female between the ages of 18 and 25 who had been deceased for two to ten years. In August 2007, DNA testing confirmed the remains were those of Mayuko Kawase. The discovery shifted the focus of the investigation from a missing person case to a homicide. Despite this development, the exact cause of her death could not be determined from the skeletal remains.
The investigation into the homicide of Mayuko Kawase remains open but unsolved. To date, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or persons of interest in her death. No arrests have been made, and the circumstances leading to her demise continue to be a mystery. The Oklahoma City Police Department continues to seek information from the public that might bring closure to Mayuko's family and provide answers in her tragic and untimely death.
