On July 25, 2008, Arnell Durham, a 24-year-old resident of Oakland, California, became one of the victims of the city’s ongoing homicide crisis. His death was one of the 115 homicides reported in Oakland that year, during a period marked by a high rate of violence, particularly affecting young men of color.
