On August 15, 2002, William Tyree Jr. was ambushed and shot four times as he arrived home from work in Springfield, Ohio, at approximately 2:40 am. The attack occurred in his backyard just as he exited his vehicle. As a result of the shooting, Tyree was left paralyzed from the waist down and spent the remaining years of his life confined to a wheelchair.
