On August 15, 2002, William Tyree Jr. was ambushed and shot four times as he arrived home from work in Springfield, Ohio, at approximately 2:40 am. The attack occurred in his backyard just as he exited his vehicle. As a result of the shooting, Tyree was left paralyzed from the waist down and spent the remaining years of his life confined to a wheelchair. Despite his severe injuries, he remained determined and adapted to his new circumstances as much as he could, continuing to live as independently as possible.
However, Tyree ultimately succumbed to medical complications related to his injuries on October 6, 2010. A blood clot led to his sudden death, and the case was officially classified as a homicide. His father, William Tyree Sr., discovered him unresponsive in his wheelchair, and described the profound sadness of seeing his son endure years of pain, only for justice to remain elusive. The family expressed frustration that no one had been charged for the crime, even after Tyree's death had clearly been linked to the shooting incident.
The Springfield Police Department has stated that they have continued to actively investigate the case, and that they are revisiting all aspects of the original investigation in hopes of making progress. Tyree himself wrote a letter to the community not long after the attack, pleading for anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, in conjunction with local law enforcement, continues to seek information, hoping to bring closure to the Tyree family and justice for William Tyree Jr..
