On May 17, 2012, John Szakacs, a 47-year-old resident of Cleveland, Ohio, was attacked and severely beaten. He was later taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on June 27, 2012. The incident took place in Cuyahoga County, and John, known by the nickname "Ponytail," sustained extensive injuries during the assault. He suffered broken ribs, a lacerated spleen, and multiple bruises, which ultimately led to his death over a month later.
Despite efforts to investigate the case, it remained unsolved for several years. John’s sister, Christine Mahoney, persisted in her quest for justice, and eventually, her determination led to an arrest in 2023. The Cleveland Police Department arrested a suspect in connection with the 2012 murder, finally providing some measure of resolution to Szakacs' family after more than a decade of waiting. The individual charged in connection with John's death was his former live-in girlfriend, Michelle Mallet, who faced charges of murder and felonious assault.
