Tammy Lyn Homolka was a vibrant and athletic 15-year-old girl with her whole life ahead of her. Born on January 1, 1975, she grew up in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, with her parents, Karel and Dorothy, and two older sisters, Karla and Lori. A popular Grade 10 student at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School, Tammy was known for her love of sports. She was a talented athlete who participated in track and field and cross-country running, but her true passion was soccer. With golden hair and blue eyes, she was remembered by those who knew her as a beautiful person, inside and out, whose energy and spirit left a lasting impression.

The Homolka family’s sense of normalcy was shattered on Christmas Eve of 1990. That evening, in the basement of the family home, Tammy was drugged and sexually assaulted by her sister Karla’s fiancé, Paul Bernardo, with Karla’s active participation. Bernardo, who was already known to police as the "Scarborough Rapist," had developed a disturbing fixation on his fiancée's younger sister. He had pressured Karla to "gift" him her sister's virginity for Christmas. Karla stole anesthetics from the veterinary clinic where she worked, and on December 24th, they drugged Tammy with a cocktail of alcohol and sedatives.

While unconscious, Tammy was assaulted by both Bernardo and her sister, who took turns videotaping the horrific act. During the assault, Tammy began to vomit and choke. Though they made some attempts to revive her, they first focused on concealing evidence of their crime. They dressed her, moved her into her own bedroom, and then called for an ambulance. Paramedics rushed Tammy to St. Catharines General Hospital, but she never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead a few hours later. In the immediate aftermath, her death was tragically ruled an accident, with the official cause listed as choking on her own vomit after consuming too much alcohol.

For more than two years, the horrific truth of what happened to Tammy remained a secret. The investigation into her death was only reopened after Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka were arrested for the kidnappings, sexual assaults, and murders of two other teenage girls, Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French. In January 1993, after suffering a severe beating from Bernardo, Karla finally left him and confessed to her family, who then alerted the police. She revealed Bernardo's identity as the Scarborough Rapist and implicated him in the murders, leading to their arrests. It was only then that she admitted her and Bernardo's role in her own sister's death.

The revelations led to one of the most notorious criminal cases in Canadian history. Paul Bernardo, also known as "The Schoolgirl Killer," was convicted of numerous offenses, including two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of French and Mahaffy, kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault, and committing an indignity to a human body. For his monstrous crimes, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years and declared a dangerous offender. His charges also included manslaughter in Tammy's death.

In what became a highly controversial "deal with the devil," Karla Homolka struck a plea bargain with prosecutors in exchange for her testimony against Bernardo. She pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the deaths of Mahaffy and French and served a 12-year sentence. The facts surrounding Tammy's death were considered in her sentencing, adding two years to her term, though she was never separately charged for it. The full extent of her willing participation in the crimes, including against her own sister, was only revealed after the deal was made, when investigators discovered the videotapes the couple had hidden, sparking public outrage. Tammy Homolka was laid to rest at Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St. Catharines.
