On January 20, 2015, at approximately 9:30 p.m., 16-year-old Zyshonne Jenkins was involved in a shooting near the intersection of East Livingston Avenue and Dellwood Avenue in Columbus, Ohio. During the incident, Jenkins was shot in the midsection in what was reported to be an exchange of gunfire with an unidentified individual. Officers responding to the scene found Jenkins critically injured along with a witness.
He was taken to Grant Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of January 21, 2015.
The shooting was believed to be gang-related, prompting heightened security measures in the area. In response to concerns about possible retaliation, four Columbus high schools—Linden-McKinley, Mifflin, Northland, and Whetstone—were placed on a precautionary lockdown the following day. These lockdowns, categorized as Level II, meant that students remained indoors with added security measures to screen anyone entering or leaving the buildings.
Despite investigative efforts, the suspect in Jenkins's homicide has not been identified. The Columbus Police Department continues to urge anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward to help solve the case and bring justice to Jenkins's family.
