In the spring of 2003, a wave of violence swept through the quiet coastal community of Mayport, Florida, leaving a trail of devastation and heartbreak. Among the victims of this tragic series of events was Richard L. Reese, a 39-year-old Male remembered by those who knew him as a true friend with an infectious laugh and a talent for lifting spirits with a well-timed joke.
His life was cut short on May 18, 2003, when he became the fourth victim of a killing spree that would eventually lead to the capture of one of Florida's most notorious serial killers.
The man responsible for Richard’s death was William Edward Wells III, a 27-year-old resident of Mayport who became known as "The Monster of Mayport." Wells's rampage began on May 14, 2003, inside the mobile home he shared with his estranged wife, 30-year-old Irene Wells. Over several days, a grim sequence of events unfolded. After killing his wife, Wells murdered her brother, John S. McMains, 32, and her father, Bill McMains, 60, when they separately came to the home and discovered what he had done.
On May 18, Wells contacted Richard L. Reese, who was an acquaintance of the family. Wells later confessed to police that he invited Reese over to the mobile home. There, amidst the hidden horror of the preceding days, Wells shot and killed him. Another acquaintance, 20-year-old James Lee Young, was also murdered by Wells in the same home. For days, Wells remained in the trailer with the bodies of his victims and his four-year-old son.
The gruesome discovery was made after a 12-hour standoff with police on May 24, 2003, during which Wells held his young son hostage. After surrendering, the full scope of the tragedy was revealed as investigators found the five bodies inside the home. The community was left in shock as the identities of the victims, including Richard Reese, were confirmed.
In the aftermath, William Edward Wells III confessed to the five murders. He initially sought the death penalty, even calling a local newspaper from jail to detail his crimes. However, in September 2004, he pleaded guilty to five counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. His violence did not end with his incarceration. Wells would go on to commit two more murders and an attempted murder while in prison. For the 2019 murder of a fellow inmate, William Chapman, Wells was finally sentenced to death and is currently on death row.
Friends of Richard Reese were left to mourn a man they described as a cherished friend. In an online memorial, one friend wrote, "RICHIE WAS A TRUE FRIEND. HE WAS ALWAYS THERE WITH A JOKE TO PICK ME UP WHEN I WAS DOWN... I WILL NEVER FORGET HIS SMILE OR HIS LAUGH." Another remembered him as someone they loved as family, stating, "THE WORLD WILL NEVER BE THE SAME WITHOUT HIM." These heartfelt tributes paint a picture of a man whose warmth and humor left a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to have known him.
