It was the night he was meant to be celebrating his birthday, but it ended up being the last night of Gustavo Guzman Grajales’s life. On September 13, 2026, the 29-year-old man was shot and killed in his own bed in San Benito, Texas, the victim of a quadruple homicide that also claimed the lives of his wife and two other family members, leaving his three young children orphaned.
Gustavo and his wife, Maria Ester Armayrany Moreno Sanchez, 28, lived in a home in the 32000 block of County
Road 819. That Saturday night, family and friends had gathered to celebrate Gustavo's birthday. Also living in the home was Christian Joel Maldonado Pacheco, a 25-year-old Honduran national who the family had taken in about four years prior. One of the victims, 67-year-old Leticia Vargas Fernandez, reportedly considered him like a son.
According to law enforcement, the celebration ended, and Pacheco and another family member, 50-year-old Donaciano Guzman Vargas, went to a couple of bars. Pacheco told investigators that on the drive home, Vargas, who was driving, became angry and began to verbally berate him, telling him he was worthless. Pacheco claimed this caused him to become upset. He admitted to shooting Vargas, leaving his body on Russell Lane, and then driving back to the family's residence.
The horror continued inside the home. At approximately 3:18 a.m., Pacheco himself called 911 to report that he had just killed his family with a Glock handgun. Dispatchers later reported hearing children crying and even gunshots during the call. According to Pacheco’s confession to investigators, he went into Gustavo's bedroom and shot him as he slept. He told police he heard Gustavo say "no mames" just before he fired. When Gustavo's wife, Maria, screamed, Pacheco shot and killed her as well. Spent bullet casings were later found in the bassinet of their two-month-old baby, who was sleeping next to the bed.
After killing the couple, Pacheco told investigators he picked up the infant and gathered the couple's two other children, ages four and nine. As he was leading them out of the house, he was confronted by Leticia Vargas Fernandez. Pacheco shot and killed her while still holding the baby, as the other two children walked in front of him. He then took the three children outside to wait for police to arrive.
When deputies from the Cameron County Sheriff's Office arrived, they found Pacheco outside with the unharmed children. Inside, they discovered the bodies of Gustavo, Maria, and Leticia. The body of Donaciano Guzman Vargas had been found earlier by a passerby on Russell Lane around 2:40 a.m. Pacheco was taken into custody and gave a full confession, telling investigators his motive was that he was "tired of being bullied," a claim authorities were still investigating.
Christian Joel Maldonado Pacheco was charged with four counts of capital murder of multiple persons and three counts of abandoning and endangering a child. He was held at the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center without bond, deemed a flight risk and a danger to the public. During his arraignment, he initially declined a court-appointed attorney, but the judge assigned one to him given the severity of the charges. The case remained pending in the court system as of late September 2026. The three children who lost their parents in the massacre were placed in the care of other family members.
