Mark Harrison, a devoted grandfather, church leader, and mentor known for his compassion and willingness to help anyone, was 54 years old when his life was cut short. Remembered by loved ones as a man of action and dedication, Harrison was a deacon at The Gate Church in Fresno, California, where he was known for speaking life into people and offering words of encouragement. His longtime friend, Warren Bryant, recalled, "If you knew him, he's gonna pour into you.
If you walked up to him and he didn't know you, and he was hurting, he's gonna try to speak some life into you and give you some kind of hope with some words of encouragement." Harrison's brother, Phillip Grigsby, described him as a man who loved everyone, never judged, and was always willing to give the shirt off his back.
The tragedy unfolded on Sunday, October 11, 2026, inside a home in East Central Fresno. At approximately 2:19 p.m., gunfire erupted at the residence near the intersection of Fordham and Dayton avenues. When Fresno Police Department officers arrived, they found Mark Harrison suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts by emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 61-year-old woman, identified as Harrison's girlfriend, was also shot during the attack. She was transported to a local hospital and was listed in stable condition.
The violence was particularly harrowing as it happened in the presence of Harrison's five grandchildren. The children, whose ages ranged from one to eleven, were all inside the home when the shooting occurred. According to Harrison's brother, two of the children witnessed the shooting, and the youngest, a one-year-old, was just feet away from the gunfire. Miraculously, none of the children were physically injured. "We're just fortunate that none of the children were struck by the bullet because it could have been even more devastating news for the family," Grigsby said.
The investigation quickly focused on a suspect who was known to the family. Grigsby told reporters that the shooter was not a stranger, stating, "It's someone familiar to the family, also familiar to the city, and so we're just asking those who know his whereabouts, turn him in." The day after the shooting, on Monday, October 12, 2026, Fresno Police detectives arrested 50-year-old Rufus Levels in connection with the homicide.
Levels was taken into custody and booked into the Fresno County Jail. He faces charges of murder for the death of Mark Harrison, as well as attempted murder for the shooting of Harrison's girlfriend, and robbery. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly detailed by investigators. Crime scene tape remained outside the home the day after the shooting as detectives continued to process evidence and piece together the events that led to the deadly confrontation.
In the wake of the tragedy, messages of support poured in from the community for a man who had touched many lives through his faith and kindness. His family's focus turned to honoring his legacy and seeking a just resolution to the case. "This individual that caused so much pain to our family and committed such a heinous crime, we pray that justice prevails," Grigsby stated. The case against Rufus Levels is now proceeding through the court system.
