Devaughn McBride, known affectionately to his loved ones as “Buddha,” was a quiet and laid-back man devoted to his family. The 32-year-old, a male resident of Vallejo, California, lived in an apartment on Marin Street with his mother and younger brother, with whom he shared a close bond. Friends and family remember him for his shy, beautiful smile and his peaceful nature. He was a hardworking man who enjoyed playing video games and, above all, was a father to his 12-year-old son.
A friend described him as someone who minded his own business, went to work, and came home. In the summer of 2026, he had proudly secured a permanent position as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service.
The morning of Tuesday, October 6, 2026, began like any other for Devaughn. He put on his postal uniform and, shortly before his shift was to begin, left his apartment to walk to a nearby corner store for a beverage and snacks—a daily routine. Just after he walked through the front gate of his apartment complex on the 200 block of Marin Street, near Curtola Parkway, tragedy struck. Shortly before 8:30 a.m., witnesses reported hearing two gunshots as someone in a passing vehicle opened fire. Devaughn was struck by at least one bullet.
The scene was chaotic. One neighbor witnessed a first responder attempting to resuscitate Devaughn on the sidewalk. "It was shocking," the neighbor later said. "To walk out and see someone dying. It's sad. In the area you live in." Paramedics arrived and rushed him to a local hospital, but despite their life-saving efforts, Devaughn succumbed to his injuries. His death marked the ninth homicide in the city of Vallejo that year.
The Vallejo Police Department launched a homicide investigation into the senseless killing. The morning had been particularly violent in the city; Devaughn's shooting was one of three major incidents within a 20-minute span. About 20 minutes earlier and two-and-a-half miles away, another man had been shot and critically wounded near Springs Road and Castlewood Drive after his car crashed. Minutes after that, a fatal, though unrelated, car crash occurred just a few blocks from where Devaughn was shot. Investigators have been looking into whether there is a connection between the two shootings.
Devaughn's family was left devastated and bewildered by the loss. They are adamant that he had no involvement in any criminal activity and believe his death was a tragic case of mistaken identity. "There is no criminal activity, period," his aunt Stacey told a reporter. "This has never been his character. We are all devastated. Why? We really don't have any clue. That person took a lovely life." The U.S. Postal Service also released a statement expressing their sorrow. "We are extremely saddened and we'll keep his family in our prayers," a spokesperson said.
In the days following the shooting, a memorial of candles and flowers grew on the sidewalk where Devaughn fell, a tribute from a community grieving a man who was simply starting his workday. The questions surrounding his death, however, remain unanswered. As of the latest reports from October 2026, no arrests have been made, and police have not publicly identified any suspects or a motive in the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing. The Vallejo Police Department urges anyone with information regarding the case to contact Detective Seamus Lanham at (707) 648-4524 or Detective Stephanie Diaz at (707) 648-5430. Anonymous tips can also be provided to the department's tip line at 1-800-488-9383.
