In the early afternoon of a late September Saturday, Michael Lorenus, a 37-year-old man from the Boston suburb of Milton, was shot and killed inside a commercial building. The brazen daylight attack left a community on edge and detectives searching for two men who were seen fleeing the area. To date, his death remains an unsolved homicide.
The shooting occurred on September 26, 2026, in Boston’s Hyde Park neighborhood.
At approximately 1:09 p.m., officers from District E-18 of the Boston Police Department were dispatched to 54 Walter Street following a report of a person shot. The address is part of a small cluster of businesses located in a warehouse area adjacent to the tracks for the Fairmount commuter rail line. Inside one of the buildings, which was later identified as a marijuana cultivation facility, officers found Michael Lorenus. He was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Boston EMS personnel arrived at the scene, but Lorenus’s injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation began immediately, with a large police presence descending on Walter Street. Witnesses reported seeing two men running from the scene of the crime. The men were spotted fleeing along the nearby commuter rail tracks, heading outbound from the city. This prompted a wide-ranging search of the area and significantly impacted public transportation.
As part of the crime scene investigation, police officers scoured the area along the train tracks. Near the Fairmount Avenue bridge, an officer discovered a gun magazine, a key piece of evidence in the search for the shooters. The police activity forced the MBTA to interrupt service on the Fairmount Line for approximately two hours. All stops on the Franklin Line between Newmarket and Fairmount were also canceled for the remainder of the day as detectives continued their work.
The Boston Police Department’s Homicide Unit is leading the investigation into Michael Lorenus's death. In the days following the shooting, the department publicly identified him as the victim and confirmed the circumstances of his death. However, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not released any descriptions of the two men seen running from the building. The motive for the shooting has not been disclosed, and the investigation remains active and ongoing.
