Leonard Villapudua Garcia was 50 years old when he was fatally stabbed on Friday, August 14, 2015, in Lincoln Heights, just northeast of downtown Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died of stab wounds at Lincoln Park, 3529 N. Mission Road. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a case of the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollenbeck Division.
The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report gave a short account of what witnesses saw. "Shortly after 5 p.m., Garcia got into an argument with another man, described by witnesses as a Latino between the ages of 25 and 30 years old, said LAPD Det. Jose Ramirez. The argument became physical, and the man pulled out a sharp object and stabbed Garcia." Ramirez said it was unknown what Garcia was stabbed with.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:15 p.m., according to coroner's records.
The detective told the Times that Garcia "is a regular at the park and the suspect is also presumed to be a frequent visitor." The two men may have known each other, Ramirez said, but investigators did not know what they had been arguing about. "It could have been anything," he said.
That account matters. The attack happened in a public park in the late afternoon of a summer Friday, in front of witnesses who were able to describe the man who did it. Other regulars may have known the attacker by sight.
Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about Leonard Villapudua Garcia has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no follow-up news report appears to have been published. Leonard Garcia is a common name, and searches for it turn up obituaries of many other men across the country. His middle name, Villapudua, is far less common and may have been a family surname. He surely had family and friends who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record.
Lincoln Heights is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Los Angeles, a largely working-class area of older homes and apartments east of the Los Angeles River and northeast of downtown. Lincoln Park, which sits along Mission Road, is one of the city's older public parks, with a lake, open lawns and recreation facilities, and it is home to the Plaza de la Raza cultural center. The area is patrolled by the LAPD's Hollenbeck Division.
By the mid-2010s Los Angeles was recording roughly 250 to 300 homicides a year, among the lowest totals in decades, yet many of those killings still went unsolved.
No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Leonard Villapudua Garcia could be found in news archives or public records. More than ten years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who spent time at Lincoln Park in the summer of 2015, or who saw the argument there on the afternoon of August 14, may hold information that could help detectives identify the man witnesses described. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. The Times asked anyone with information to call Hollenbeck Homicide detectives at 342-8900. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
