Yelena Yurovskaya was 48 years old when she died on Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in Century City, on the Westside of Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, she died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 2029 Century Park East. Her death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles Police Department West Los Angeles Division case.

She was a white woman in her late 40s. Beyond her name, her age and the place where she died, almost nothing about Yelena Yurovskaya has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. She surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who she was, but none of that has entered the public record. Her name is not a common one in the United States, and searches for it turned up only listings copied from the Los Angeles Times Homicide Report, with no other record that can be tied to her.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether she was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day she was hurt, whether she died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

The address the coroner gave is not a typical residential street. Century Park East is lined with high-rise office towers, which suggests she may have been hurt or found at or near a place of work or business rather than at home, although the record does not say whether she worked there, lived nearby or was only passing through.

Century City is a commercial district on the Westside, built in the 1960s on land that had been part of the 20th Century Fox studio backlot, and the studio still operates next door. Its skyline of office towers holds law firms, talent agencies, financial companies and other businesses, and its large outdoor shopping center draws visitors from across the region. Few people live in the district itself compared with the surrounding neighborhoods of Westwood, Cheviot Hills and Beverly Hills, and much of its daily life revolves around office workers, building staff and shoppers. A death ruled a homicide in a place like this would normally have drawn attention, which makes the silence around her case all the more striking.

Homicides in Los Angeles rose sharply in the early 2000s, climbing past 600 in 2002, and detectives carried heavy caseloads. Many killings from those years were never solved.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Yelena Yurovskaya could be found in news archives or public records. More than 25 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who worked in or near the buildings on Century Park East in September 2000, or who knew Yelena and the people around her, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
