Jae Oh was 38 years old when he died on Friday, July 27, 2007, outside his home in Sunland, in the northeast San Fernando Valley. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 7851 Hillrose Street. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles Police Department case handled by the Foothill Division.
According to the Los Angeles Times Homicide Report, Oh was an acupuncturist with a business in Burbank. That morning he left his house in what the Times called "this quiet, residential neighborhood" to go to work, Det. Pat Barron of LAPD Foothill Homicide said. He got into his car and started it, "but then was somehow pulled, lured or forced out." His attacker hit him on the head with what Barron described only as "a hard object." Nothing was taken, "neither money nor valuables." A neighbor found him lying dead, and his wife, children and other family members came out of the house to find him.
In a news release issued on October 31, 2007, the LAPD said Foothill Area officers responded at about 7:35 a.m. to the 7800 block of Hillrose. Detectives believed Oh "went to start his car," got out for a minute, and "someone hit him in the head with a hard object." Officers found him unconscious on the sidewalk, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. "Jae Oh's vehicle was not stolen and the motive for the assault is unknown at this time," the department said. It described the suspect as a Black man in his early 20s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a medium build. No one was ever publicly named.
The case is striking because it seems to have had no obvious reason behind it. A man was attacked beside his own car, in daylight, outside the house where his family was, and the attacker took nothing. The release did not say whether investigators believed he was targeted, mistaken for someone else, or attacked at random. No obituary or memorial page for him could be found for this story.
Sunland sits in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains at the northeast edge of the city of Los Angeles, next to Tujunga. It is known for its semi-rural feel, with single-family homes, large lots, horse properties and views of the mountains. Hillrose Street is a residential street where neighbors would likely recognize an unfamiliar young man on foot early in the morning.
Homicides in Los Angeles fell steeply in the late 2000s and early 2010s, yet many killings from those years were never solved. Even with a description of the suspect and a clear timeline, the case was never publicly solved.
No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Jae Oh could be found in news archives or public records. More than 18 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who was in the 7800 block of Hillrose Street early on the morning of July 27, 2007, or who saw a young man leaving the area, may hold information that could help. The LAPD release asked callers to contact Foothill Homicide at 818-834-3115. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward.
