Samuel Beckner was 60 years old when he died on Thursday, June 19, 2008, three days after he was hurt on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 512 San Julian St. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles Police Department case, handled by the Central Division.
The Los Angeles Police Department described him as a Skid Row resident. According to police, he argued with a younger Black man outside a homeless shelter in the 500 block of San Julian Street at about 11 a.m. on Monday, June 16. "That unidentified man punched Beckner in the face," the department said. "When Beckner fell, his head struck the pavement causing a massive concussion." He was taken to County-USC Medical Center, where he died at 5:13 p.m. on June 19, after three days of unconsciousness.
The assault did not happen in secret. The LAPD said it "occurred in full view of dozens of people outside the homeless shelter," and part of the argument was caught on a surveillance camera, but the suspect's face was out of the frame. On June 24, detectives asked the public for help. "Mr. Beckner's family was at his bedside when life support ended," said Lt. Paul Vernon, head of the Central Detective Division. "Understandably, they are very upset and they want the person who assaulted their father arrested."
Vernon made a direct appeal to the people who live and work on Skid Row. "We clear a lot of crimes downtown thanks to local residents stepping up with information," he said. "We hope someone will come forward in this case. We just need a small lead to point us to a suspect." The Times reported that his death was the fourth homicide on Skid Row since the LAPD's Safer Cities Initiative, which placed 50 more officers in the area, began in 2006.
The words of the lieutenant show that Samuel Beckner was a father, and that his family was with him at the end. Beyond that, no obituary or memorial page could be found, and the record says little about the life he lived before that June morning.
Skid Row is a district of about 50 blocks on the east side of downtown Los Angeles, long known for having one of the largest concentrations of homeless people in the United States. San Julian Street runs through the heart of it, lined with missions, shelters and single-room hotels, and its sidewalks are crowded with people and tents at all hours.
Homicides in Los Angeles fell steeply in the late 2000s and early 2010s, yet many killings from those years were never solved.
No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Samuel Beckner could be found in news archives or public records. More than 17 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Dozens of people saw what happened outside the shelter on San Julian Street on the morning of June 16, 2008, and some of them may still remember the young man who threw the punch, or what the argument was about. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Police asked anyone with information to call Central Area detectives at 972-1203. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
