Rebecca Herrera Navarrete was 46 years old when she died on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, in East Compton, the unincorporated community just east of the city of Compton that is formally known as East Rancho Dominguez. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, she died after sustaining blunt force trauma near the intersection of South Washington Avenue and East Compton Boulevard. Her death was ruled a homicide and assigned to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau.

She was a Latina woman, recorded under both of her family names, Herrera and Navarrete, as is common in Latino naming traditions. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news report described her life or her death. The Sheriff's Department, which patrols East Compton because it is not part of any city, did not issue a press release about the case that could be found, and no public request for tips connected to her name was located.

Because so little has been released, the circumstances of her death remain unknown to the public. The record places it at a street intersection rather than at a home address, but it does not say whether she was attacked there, found there, or struck by a vehicle, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether she died at the scene or later at a hospital. Nothing published says whether detectives identified a suspect or a motive.

East Compton is a small community of modest single-family homes, apartments and corner businesses. Backers of the name East Rancho Dominguez pushed for it in 1990 to give the area its own identity, the Los Angeles Times reported at the time, but many residents still call it East Compton. Compton Boulevard is one of its main east-west streets. Like neighboring Compton, the area has long been home to working-class Black and Latino families, and it has also carried a heavy share of the county's violence. Because it is unincorporated, residents depend on the Sheriff's Compton Station for police services and on the county for most of their government.

Killings rose sharply that year in the areas the Sheriff's Department patrols. Sheriff Alex Villanueva said in January 2022 that homicides in those areas were up 94 percent from 2019 to 2021, from 145 in 2019, according to ABC7. Many of those killings were shootings that drew at least brief coverage from local television. The death of a 46-year-old woman from blunt force injuries at a Compton Boulevard intersection did not.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Rebecca Herrera Navarrete could be found in news archives or public records. More than four years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. People who live or work near Washington Avenue and Compton Boulevard, or who knew her, may still have information that could help. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
