The South Park district of Downtown Los Angeles was in the midst of a slow urban evolution in late 2006. Surrounded by light industrial warehouses, commercial storefronts, and older residential properties, the area sat just blocks away from major event hubs and transit corridors. In the quiet darkness of the early morning hours, however, the neighborhood streets emptied out, leaving vast stretches of asphalt, shadowed doorways, and quiet alleys exposed to isolated bursts of violence that went largely unseen by the surrounding city.

In the predawn hours of Monday, December 4, 2006, that quiet was shattered along the 1200 block of South Flower Street. Rodney Dale Wyatt, a 50-year-old Black man, was fatally assaulted near 1226 South Flower Street. Reports from the scene indicated that he suffered fatal stab wounds during an apparent violent confrontation on the street. Despite efforts by first responders, the trauma proved catastrophic, and he was pronounced dead shortly before three in the morning, at approximately 2:51 a.m.

Officers and detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Division were dispatched to secure the scene and begin processing physical evidence. Yellow police tape cordoned off the block as investigators searched the pavement for weapons, blood drops, and any signs of a struggle. Because the attack occurred in the middle of the night on a commercial corridor, investigators were left with few immediate witnesses who could describe the assailant or explain what initiated the altercation.

The homicide occurred during a particularly deadly stretch across Los Angeles County, where investigators were contending with hundreds of homicides each year and local precincts were routinely overwhelmed by heavy caseloads. In that environment, killings that took place on deserted sidewalks without surveillance cameras or cooperating witnesses often stalled almost immediately. While the coroner documented the homicide and designated Central Division as the investigating agency, detectives did not have enough workable leads to publicly identify a suspect, vehicle, or clear motive.

Decades later, the violent death of Rodney Dale Wyatt remains an unsolved mystery. LAPD Central Division detectives continue to maintain open files on cold cases from that era, seeking any information that could clarify the circumstances surrounding his fatal stabbing. Members of the public who may have been in the vicinity of South Flower Street that night or who hold any information regarding the crime are urged to come forward and contact the Los Angeles Police Department or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
