Robert Lee Campbell was a 68-year-old white man living in Los Angeles County in early 2009. On Thursday, January 15, 2009, his life came to a tragic and violent end following an assault in the Watts neighborhood of South Los Angeles. While the full details of his personal life, family history, and everyday routine were not widely documented in the immediate wake of the incident, coroner and law enforcement records preserve the essential circumstances surrounding his death.

The attack occurred in the 2200 block of Santa Ana Boulevard South, situated in the heart of Watts. The corridor around Santa Ana Boulevard has long been a busy urban thoroughfare lined with residential properties, community services, and care facilities. Emergency responders were dispatched following reports of an altercation and assault. Campbell sustained severe traumatic injuries during the encounter, though the precise weapon or mechanism of the physical assault was categorized under "other" in coroner reporting rather than a firearm or sharp instrument.

First responders and medical personnel attempted to provide aid, but Campbell succumbed to his injuries that same Thursday. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner took jurisdiction over the case and officially classified his death as a homicide. The findings established that Campbell died as a direct consequence of the physical assault inflicted upon him.

The investigation was assigned to detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's South Bureau Homicide division. In 2009, detectives throughout South Los Angeles contended with heavy caseloads as violent crimes and street disputes placed substantial demands on investigative resources. LAPD investigators processed the scene on Santa Ana Boulevard South, canvassed for witnesses, and sought clues that could help explain what provoked the encounter and who was responsible.

Despite the efforts of homicide investigators, few details about the attacker emerged in the public sphere. Detectives were confronted with an absence of immediate leads, and no suspects were publicly identified, arrested, or formally charged in connection with Campbell's death. Over the years, the case grew cold, leaving family and investigators without answers.

More than a decade and a half has passed since Robert Lee Campbell was killed on Santa Ana Boulevard South. LAPD South Bureau Homicide continues to seek information from anyone who may have witnessed the January 15, 2009 assault or who may know anything about the circumstances that led up to it. Members of the public with any knowledge regarding the homicide are urged to reach out to the Los Angeles Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
