On the morning of Sunday, December 20, 2015, emergency personnel were dispatched just before noon to the 12100 block of Birch Avenue in Hawthorne, California. First responders arrived to find an unconscious six-month-old infant, later identified as Madison Fowler. Paramedics administered emergency care at the scene before rushing the infant to a nearby hospital. Despite medical intervention by attending doctors and hospital staff, she could not be revived and was pronounced dead later that day.

The sudden death of the child prompted an immediate criminal inquiry by local authorities. The Hawthorne Police Department, in collaboration with homicide detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau, launched a death investigation into the circumstances that led to the child being found unresponsive. The residential corridor along Birch Avenue, lined with apartment complexes and single-family residences in the South Bay community, became an active scene as investigators worked to piece together a timeline of events leading up to the call.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner examined the child's remains and ultimately determined the manner of death to be a homicide. Official coroner records cataloged the cause of death under the classification of other, and specific details regarding the exact injuries or trauma sustained by the infant were withheld from public disclosure.

Throughout 2015, homicide investigators across Los Angeles County handled hundreds of violent deaths, with cases involving infants and toddlers drawing intensive reviews by both local municipal detectives and specialized county homicide units. Hawthorne detectives interviewed people who were in the residence and examined the environment where the child had been cared for, seeking to determine who was present and accountable during the crucial hours prior to her collapse.

Despite the coroner's office ruling the death a homicide and identifying Madison Fowler in official county records, law enforcement authorities never publicly named any suspects or announced an arrest in connection with the case. The precise sequence of events inside the home on Birch Avenue remains undisclosed, leaving open questions about the exact trauma that brought an end to the infant's life.

More than a decade after the infant's death, the case remains unsolved. The Hawthorne Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department have continued to urge anyone who resided in the area of the 12100 block of Birch Avenue in late 2015, or anyone with information regarding Madison Fowler's death, to contact investigators or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
