Damon Lamont Fleming was thirty-seven years old when his life came to an abrupt and tragic end in the heart of Los Angeles. Born on July 1, 1981, in Los Angeles to Kevin Fleming and Jamie Isiah, Damon grew up rooted in Southern California. In his youth, he lived with his aunt and cousins, attending Palm Middle School in Los Angeles before relocating to the Inland Empire, where he attended Moreno Valley High School. It was during his high school years that he met his future wife, Valerie. A passionate lover of music from an early age—his wife once recalled that he would listen to music even while asleep—he enrolled at Mt. San Jacinto College after graduation to major in music. Over the years, he balanced his artistic passions with providing for his growing family, working as a warehouse worker and later at a plant nursery, always making time to share his love of music with his children. He and Valerie married in Riverside in 2011, raising two daughters, Savanna and Alanna, and a son, Ja'mier.

On Tuesday, September 11, 2018, circumstances took a fatal turn in Downtown Los Angeles. Damon was at or near 659 South Broadway, an address set along the bustling historic Broadway commercial corridor within the city's Jewelry and theater district. The area is typically filled with daily commerce, street vendors, jewelry markets, and architectural landmarks. Under circumstances that have never been publicly detailed by investigators, an incident occurred that left Damon critically injured. Medical personnel were summoned, and he was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital just west of the downtown core.

Despite medical intervention, Damon succumbed to his injuries. While family records noted his passing peacefully at the hospital, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner examined his body and formally classified his death as a homicide. The official records designated the cause of death under the classification of other, and specific details regarding the exact physical mechanism or injuries sustained have not been made available to the public.

Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Division were assigned to take lead on the homicide investigation. The Central Division oversees Downtown Los Angeles, a dynamic urban sector that saw dozens of violent crimes and multiple homicides throughout 2018 during a broader wave of violent crime across the metropolitan area. Investigators faced the challenging task of canvassing an active urban transit and commercial corridor, looking for security surveillance, forensic evidence, or witnesses who might have observed the encounter along South Broadway.

Despite initial police inquiries, the investigation went cold. No description of a suspect was ever publicly disseminated, and authorities did not identify any persons of interest or announce motives that might explain why Damon was attacked. No arrests were made, and no criminal charges have ever been filed in court connection with his killing. For his surviving family—including his wife, three children, father, stepmother, and numerous siblings and cousins—the sudden loss left unanswered questions.

Years have elapsed since Damon Fleming was killed, and his case remains classified as an unsolved homicide. The LAPD Central Division continues to hold jurisdiction over the matter and seeks any information from members of the public who may have frequented South Broadway on that September day or who have knowledge regarding what transpired. Anyone with tips or insight into the case can contact the Los Angeles Police Department or submit anonymous information through Crime Stoppers.
