Christian Saarah, a 28-year-old man from Toronto, was fatally shot on October 18, 2016, during a targeted drive-by attack in the Rexdale area of northwest Toronto. At approximately 5:52 p.m., Toronto police were called to the area of Silverstone Drive and Albion Road after gunfire erupted between vehicles. Officers found Saarah inside a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. His younger brother, who had been driving, was also struck by the gunfire.
Both were rushed to hospital in critical condition, but Saarah died shortly after arriving. His brother survived and remained hospitalized in serious condition.
Investigators determined that Saarah had been sitting in the passenger seat while his brother was behind the wheel. Police said another vehicle pulled alongside them and someone inside opened fire repeatedly into their car. The attacking vehicle then sped away from the area. Investigators described the shooting as targeted rather than random and began searching for a white vehicle believed to have been involved. No description of the gunman or other occupants of that vehicle was publicly released in the immediate aftermath.
Detectives learned that there had apparently been some form of interaction between Saarah, his brother, and the people responsible shortly before the shooting. Police did not publicly establish exactly what occurred during that encounter or whether it amounted to an argument, confrontation, or something else. Investigators also examined whether the brothers may have been followed before the attack. Saarah had no known prior criminal history, leaving investigators without an obvious publicly identified explanation for why he had been targeted.
The surviving brother was initially too seriously injured for detectives to interview, making him a potentially important witness once his condition improved. Police appealed to motorists, residents, and anyone else who had been near Albion Road and Silverstone Drive around the time of the shooting to come forward with information about the white vehicle, the people inside it, or events leading up to the gunfire. The investigation became Toronto Police Service Homicide Case 2016-1855287, designated Homicide #55 of 2016.
No suspect has been publicly identified in Saarah's killing, and available police information does not show that anyone has been arrested or charged in connection with the attack. There consequently has been no publicly reported trial or conviction. Toronto Police currently lists Christian Saarah's homicide among its cold cases, indicating that investigators still consider the killing unsolved and continue to seek information capable of identifying the person or people responsible.
