On the evening of September 6, 2026, the life of 18-year-old Monica Rose Rokita was tragically cut short in a Westland, Michigan apartment she had recently started sharing with her boyfriend. A recent graduate of River Rouge High School, Monica was described by friends as sweet, caring, and full of life. The authorities were called to the Landings apartment complex on Hunter Avenue around 6:00 p.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered a gruesome scene. Monica was found unresponsive in the kitchen and living room area, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her face, arm, chest, and stomach. Despite the immediate response from medics, her injuries were too severe, and she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation quickly centered on her 20-year-old boyfriend, Daniel Jarrett Dean. It is alleged that Dean used a rifle to shoot Monica multiple times before fleeing the apartment. His freedom was short-lived, as Westland police officers were able to locate and arrest him a short time later. Friends of the couple later revealed to news outlets that the relationship had been a tumultuous one, with some expressing that there had been warning signs. The couple had reportedly just gotten back together a few days prior to the fatal shooting. A GoFundMe campaign was established by friends to help Monica's grieving family with funeral and memorial expenses.

In the days following the incident, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Daniel Jarrett Dean with one count of premeditated first-degree murder and one count of felony firearm. Prosecutor Kym Worthy described the crime as "overkill" and expressed the "utter gruesomeness" of the act, vowing to aggressively prosecute the case. Dean was arraigned via video in 18th District Court before Judge Michael McNamara and a $1 million cash or surety bond was set. The case against Dean has begun its journey through the legal system, with a Probable Cause Conference scheduled for September 17, 2026, and a Preliminary Examination set for September 24, 2026. The charges are allegations, and Dean is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The case highlights a tragic instance of domestic violence that ended a young woman's life just as she was stepping into adulthood.
